5 Rowan Lane Restoration
Open City completed the restoration of No. 5 Rowan Lane, an iconic modernist residence designed by Adele Naudé Santos and Antonio de Souza Santos. Completed in 1972, the house is celebrated as one of the finest examples of the Modern Movement in Africa.
Our work focused on sensitively returning the home to its original vision. We meticulously reinstated the original steel-framed windows and doors where aluminium replacements had been installed, and repaired extensive areas of terracotta tiling—most notably along the roof walkway. A lush indigenous roof garden, as originally conceived by the architects, was planted to crown the restoration.
Inside, we made subtle updates to the kitchen and bathrooms to enhance functionality while respecting the integrity of the design. Open City also curated the home’s furniture and art, ensuring that every detail aligned with the spirit of the original architecture.
