Long Beach House
As the last house fronting the Noordhoek Long Beach, this site is ideally situated to take in sweeping panoramic views of the beach and surrounding mountains. Working with the existing house as a starting point, the architectural language developed as a series of carved spaces with heavy walls framing desired views, and imparting a sense of shelter and serenity. This was refined by learning from the work of Luis Barragán, creating additional entertainment courtyards and incorporating plants and natural features, rooting the design into the surrounding natural landscape.
Internally, light floods the previously underlit stairwell through various large skylights, casting playful shadows and shafts of light on the contrasting heavy architectural shapes. To emphasise the tranquil and sheltered atmosphere, a natural material palette has been used in the renovation. Rhythmic locally sourced timber beams and ceilings create continuity from room to room.
